In this article, Submitted by Kathleen Blanchard RN on Dec 1st, 2009, she said, “Keeping cells young with exercise might be the result of remaining physically active throughout life. New research shows that intense exercise may be anti-aging.” Now there are a couple words in this statement that we need to pay close attention to, the first is “young”, implying that the exercise routine should start when we are young and continue as a life style all of our lives. And the other word is “intense”, not just a walking or stretching program or even yoga which many people like to do. Intense exercise means to work out hard and long enough to stress your body beyond its comfort level thus causing it to grow to a peak level of health and then say there.
On the other hand if you are a Baby-Boomer like I am, you should also read this other article:
Study Shows High Levels of Physical Activity Linked to Knee Damage
By Charlene Laino

Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD
Nov. 30, 2009 (Chicago) — Weekend warriors, take note: Too much exercise may place you at risk for arthritis.
Charlene Laino tells us in this article that, “A new study shows that middle-aged men and women who engage in high levels of physical activity — at home and at work as well as at the gym — may be unwittingly damaging their knees and increasing their risk for osteoarthritis.”
She also points out that “high-impact, weight-bearing activities such as running and jumping are worse for knee health and carry a greater risk of injury over time.”
Now for the good news for us “old folks”:
Christoph Stehling, MD, of the University of California, San Francisco, chief participator in this study states, “Conversely, low-impact activities, such as swimming and cycling, may protect diseased cartilage and prevent healthy cartilage from developing disease.”
So the tip for today to Engage in Regular Exercise must take into consideration your age and beginning fitness level. I encourage you to read the two articles above and if you are not engaged in any regular exercise program to ask your Doctor if you could start one ASAP and chose one that fits you, not one that fits someone 20 or 30 years younger.
The internet is full of exercise videos. Here is just one:

Stay health, stay fit and have a LongLife.
In this Post we have 5 Proverbs of Solomon that help us to know how we are to behave if we seek LongLife.
Starting and finishing with the 9th Commandment: Deuteronomy 5 : 20 ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.’
On Life and Conduct
Proverbs 19
9 A false witness will not go unpunished,
And he who tells lies will perish.
16 He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul,
But he who is careless of conduct will die.
23 The fear of the LORD leads to life,
So that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil. Proverbs 20
2 The terror of a king is like the growling of a lion;
He who provokes him to anger forfeits his own life. Proverbs 21
6 The acquisition of treasures by a lying tongue
Is a fleeting vapor, the pursuit of death.
In today’s society telling lies is all to common place. From the young child on the playground to the worlds top leaders, all are caught in any number of lies. So why punish the child when he sees everybody doing it? Because we want our children to have LongLife, not to run down the road in pursuit of death.
The second verse includes all of the Ten Commandments and warns us not to be careless in our daily walk. Now we all know that we cannot always keep all of the Ten Commandments. It’s hard to get through even one day without breaking at least one, if not many. The idea here is to at least try, do not be careless, put some effort and thought into how you conduct your self. (Many sermons have been given on this subject. I will not do that here.)
The third verse is a reminder of what we learned in a previous Post, having a reverence and respect for God as one has for a loving earthly father. Not a shaking, scared type of fear but a fear that brings comforting sleep and protection.
And last but by no means least, in the USA we have many checks and balances set upon our leaders that protect us from direct, uninterrupted, personal retaliations. But in many parts of this world it is not so. Proverbs 20:2 is more for those folks who have to live in that type of situation where a ruler, it could be a local government official or even an actual dictator, can literally get away with murder. If one has to live under someone like that, short of moving to a better place, it is best to fly low and stay under cover if you are to gain LongLife.
To reduce the risk for the diseases of aging, to increase our ability to enjoy a LongLife, we all need to maintain a healthy weight. This will be different for all of us because we are all built differently. To know if you are over weight, or to know the extent of your overweightness, you need to know your Body Mass Index (BMI).
People who are obese (BMI of 30 or above) almost always have a large amount of body fat in relation to their height. There are exceptions, of course. Big athletes with lots of muscle might have a BMI over 30, but may still have a healthy body composition. They would not be considered obese from the perspective of health risk.
Now that you know your BMI you can set a goal for where you want to be and how long it should take you to get there. Here are some Healthy Eating Guidelines that should help. If you read last weeks post you will have a head start on what is good to eat and in what quantity.
Let me end today by suggesting a 100% guaranteed nutritious and natural way to to lose inches that you you don’t want or need and not feel hungry as you you lose those inches. It is the Shaklee Cinch Inch Loss Plan.
In today’s verses Solomon tells us some ways that the upright person will differ in outcome from the wicked person. Again we see here the righteous person along with the person who thinks and acts wisely before he speaks and the person who thinks before he acts, before he does one thing or another, before he goes one place or another.
Contrast the Upright and the Wicked Proverbs 12 : 28
In the way of righteousness is life,
And in its pathway there is no death. Proverbs 13 : 3
The one who guards his mouth preserves his life;
The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. Proverbs 16 : 17
The highway of the upright is to depart from evil;
He who watches his way preserves his life.
And what are the outcomes or rewards for this type of prudence?
First we have life, which is current life, daily life, as apposed to a pathway to death. Then we have quality of life, a higher quality of life rather than a life with no rhyme or reason, a life of ruin. Lastly we have the road of life, the progression or the length of life.
We can all do these things, be righteous and think wisely before we speak or act, to some degree of success, but if we are really seeking LongLife we should call on the Holy Spirit to be our helper, to assist us, that we might excel in these areas of our daily walk that we might obtain our goal of LongLife.
While searching through the Web this week I found a lot of good information about why and how we should eat a balanced diet if we are looking for a LongLife. This is one of those bits of information:
“A diet with less saturated fat and more unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids from fish may help improve blood sugar levels, reduce blood pressure, and decrease triglycerides in people with metabolic syndrome.”
I thought to myself, “That’s all well and good, but who are these people and what is ‘metabolic syndrome’?”
So what are we to do, what should we be eating? Here is an article titled: Healthy Diet Key to Longevity, By Dr.Cathy Wong, in which she stated that a new study suggests a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, fish, beans, low-fat dairy, and whole grains is the foundation of longevity. She went on to list some food items that we should be eating as well as many that we should avoid:
Foods Considered Healthy
* apples, pears
* citrus, banana
* lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, spinach, kale
* cabbage, root vegetables (carrots, beets, etc.)
* beans, peas
* milk with 0.5% or 1.5% fat, yogurt with 1.5% fat
* whole grain bread, crisp bread, oats
* salmon, herring, tuna, other fish excluding shellfish
Talk about a sacrifice! Seems like all the things I like most are in the “Less Healthy” list. And if you are like me, with other health issues either now or in your past then I strongly suggest you consult with your Doctor before making any drastic diet change.
1. Drink twice as much as it takes to quench your thirst.
2. Drink frequently throughout the day to prevent dehydration.
3. Drink at least eight glasses daily, or one cup for every 20 pounds of body weight. For example, a 150-pound person who does not exercise or work in hot climates needs 7.5 cups.
Do yourself a favor. Keep track of how much water you drink today and see if you are really taking in an adequate amount.
Nobody said that the road to a LongLife was an easy one. We just need to make those necessary life changes, change some bad habits and replace them with good habits. Only then will we be on the road to LongLife.
In the November 1st Post I gave the definition of Righteous and listed a few verses related to Righteousness as it pertains to LongLife.
In the 11th chapter of Proverbs, Solomon encourages us to not only be Righteous but to continually be Righteous if our goal is to “attain to life”.
This is not only a difficult task; it is impossible. Only Christ Himself can continually be righteous.
So what are we to do? We must call on the Holy Spirit to help us when we start to falter. He is our strength. We cannot attain righteousness continually all on our own.
Many times I hear people say, “Could you pray for me? I’ve tried everything else and nothing is helping.”
That’s not bad but it is backwards. When we start to falter in any way and realize we are not in Gods will, the FIRST thing we should do is pray to God that the Holy Spirit would help us, not try to fix things that are beyond our ability to fix. That’s not to say that we can not do things for our selves, we all have many abilities to do things that are good and righteous, but when we notice that we are out of God’s will and turning away from righteousness (and we will know because the Laws of God are written on our hearts and knowing those Laws will convict us) it is at that point that we need to stop and pray for the Holy Spirit to help us remain righteous. And with continual righteousness we can attain LongLife.
I believe it is only a matter of time. This morning I was reading an article called: Anti-Cancer Superfoods: Do They Really Work? This article mentioned many foods that are good for cancer patients and people who are prone to getting cancer due to the genes they received from their parents.
Once again muscadine grapes were mentioned due to their high content of Resveratrol, one of the main substances in the daily supplement, Vivix, that I have been taking for the past 14 months.
Personally, I believe we would all be better off, health wise, if we could just find more “naturally” home grown foods to eat and cut down on the corporate processed food that we find in most grocery stores and supper markets. But since that is very time consuming I have settled for a mix of some “natural” foods along with my corporate processed foods and a daily intake of 100% Guaranteed supplements to add the necessary nutrients that are not available in my current diet.
Earlier this year Fox News reported on research done on Resveratrol.
They stated back in June 2009 that the Resveratrol “pill” could be coming some day in the future. Well the future is here and even better than a pill Resveratrol is available in liquid form today.
Last Sunday we looked at a few of Solomon’s proverbs that told us how we should act in order to gain LongLife. Then near the end of Proverbs Chapter 10 he addresses how we should think, what should be in our hearts and minds. Solomon uses the word “fear” here but it may not be the fear that you are familiar with. This fear; “Is in the Old Testament used as a designation of true piety (Proverbs 1:7; Job 28:28; Psalm 19:9). It is a fear conjoined with love and hope, and is therefore not a slavish dread, but rather filial reverence.”
I know, there are a lot of words in that definition that we don’t use every day, like piety, conjoined, slavish, filial. Let me put it in my own words: The kind of fear in Proverbs 10:27 is mixed with love and hope to produce a relationship more like that of a son or daughter to a loving father than that of a horse thief to a hangman.
In this loving relationship our fear should be that if we would do something wrong our Father would find out and be disappointed in us, not that we would be punished for our wrong doing.
Proverbs 10
27 The fear of the LORD prolongs life,
But the years of the wicked will be shortened.
If this “fear of the Lord” that He would find fault in what we are doing and be disappointed keeps us from doing those foolish things than what would be the outcome? LongLife! In the Old Testament we have 10 Commandments that we are to follow and in the New Testament we have two. And yes, God will be disappointed when be do not follow those commandments, but He is a Loving Father and not a cruel task-master. He wants us to have an abundant life while we are here on Earth. When we blow it we need to ask Him to forgive us for what we have done and He will, so we can get on with our lives and try to do better next time.
What’s all the fuss about? Is this stuff real or not?
For the past couple of weeks I have been seeing so much new information about this polyphenol, Resveratrol. There is no way I can post on all of the new information I find, so this week I am going to insert a good number of links that you may follow at your leisure.
I have only listed the links from the last week in October 2009.
I will only comment on one that I liked most.
Here they all are: (comments to follow)
But this one, the one from Winona Daily News, gives me something to talk about. In his post Dr Frank Bures’ first statement started out “Resveratrol is an antioxidant supplement…”. So I agree with him so far. Then he points out that word Resveratrol “seems to” come from two words “resinous” which Webster’s on line dictionary defines as: link to definition for those who really want to know. And “Veratrum grandiflorum” which he defines as a “poisonous herb”. Even though only some parts of this plant are considered “poisonous” and it may be a viable source of Resveratrol from the non-poisonous parts. I personally would not use a product that had Veratrum grandiflorum as one of its ingredients. It’s not the best way to obtain Resveratrol and I don’t know of any reputable company that would use it. I have been taking Resveratrol daily for over a year now that comes from European Elderberry extract, Muscadine Grape extract, Purple Carrot extract and Polygonum cuspidatum root and the most noticeable side effect I have seen is a dramatic decrease in sickness, only one minor cold in over 14 months.
He goes on to give some back ground and then states the obvious in that on the containers of supplements sold by Walgreens the small print reads, “The Food and Drug Administration has not evaluated these statements. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.” That is because this statement is required by Law and last time I heard, when a person dies of “old age” it is reported as dying of “natural causes” not from a “disease”. So supplements are not trying to “cure or prevent any disease” but they are meant to promote health and longevity in a “natural” way without drugs which are meant “to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease” but in more cases than should be drugs can cause a lot of problematic side effects.
Next this Doctor talks sarcastically about the research done by others in the field of Resveratrol. Maybe he doesn’t realize that first experiments are done on non-human subjects, at least most of the time. Then he points out that Resveratrol extended the life span of “obese” mice. Now let me think here……. What is the largest epidemic in America now? OBESITY! Do you think some people might be just a little interested in a study that increases the life span in “obese” mice? He goes on to report that Resveratrol “did suppress the growth of tumors of the skin, breast, gastrointestinal tract, prostrate and lung.” A pretty good start for such a relatively new member to the spotlight of natural supplements considering that cancer is projected to become the leading cause of death worldwide in the year 2010.
He calls it curious that Resveratrol “improves the function of all cells’ power plants, called mitochondria” when the same results can be achieved through a calorie-restrictive diet in mice. If only mice could talk. I’d like to give them a survey. Which would you prefer; a dose of great tasting Resveratrol every day or a calorie-restrictive diet? What do you thing they would say? For me, I’ll take the Resveratrol thank you.
I think this Doctor really likes Resveratrol because he points out so many good qualities in his post, like this one: “To date, nothing reported is detrimental, even in the few human studies with ‘large doses.’” That sounds like a supporter of Resveratrol to me.
But then he is beguiled by the fact that a “natural substance” is “able to inhibit our ailments“. I venture to guess that there are many thousands of people that are not beguiled by that fact at all. In fact let me take one last quote from our good Doctors post; “One reader told me she has taken it for a few months, and has seen results on her trips to the scale that are far better than average.” I can only suppose that the “it” referred to here is Resveratrol since that is what we have been writing about here and that this lady is not beguiled either.
Finally our Doctor friend ends with some very good advice, “Just remember not to replace good old grub with too many supplements.” Since “Supplements” are not food, or “good old grub” and by their very definition, “a product taken orally that contains one or more ingredients (as vitamins or amino acids) that are intended to supplement one’s diet and are not considered food” I wholeheartedly agree with our learned Doctor here as well, we should all add to a good diet, quality, proven and guaranteed supplements not “replace” it.
Main Entry: righ·teous
Pronunciation: \ˈrī-chəs\
Function: adjective
Etymology: alteration of earlier rightuous, alteration of Middle English rightwise, rightwos, from Old English rihtwīs, from riht, noun, right + wīs wise
Date: 1530
1 : acting in accord with divine or moral law : free from guilt or sin
2 a : morally right or justifiable (a righteous decision) b : arising from an outraged sense of justice or morality (righteous indignation)
Now that we all know what Righteousness is, how do you suppose that the act of being Righteous will help us to live a LongLife?
2 Ill-gotten gains do not profit,
But righteousness delivers from death.
11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,
But the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
16 The wages of the righteous is life,
The income of the wicked, punishment.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many,
But fools die for lack of understanding.
Think about it for a moment. If Righteousness is “acting in accord with divine or moral law” than doing otherwise would naturally bring on negative results, death, violence, punishment, lack of understanding. Look at nature, even lion cubs, bear cubs, wild dogs, wolves, even insects like bees and ants must follow laws in order to survive. Look into any civilization from the beginning of time. When has this rule not played out just as the verses above state?
It just makes sense. If you want to have Life and actually enjoy Life (John 10:10) then the way to get Life is by being Righteous before God and man.
